An App To Fight Antimicrobial Resistance.
Nada Malou, a specialist in AMR and diagnostics, saw the urgency of the situation and initiated the Antibiogo project within Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF). Designed and tested by the MSF Foundation, Antibiogo is an innovative tool to combat antibiotic resistance. It provides an effective, efficient, and affordable solution for low- and middle-income countries (LMIC).
Antibiogo uses image processing, artificial intelligence, and expert systems to deliver highly accurate results, matching the interpretations of qualified microbiologists 90-98% of the time.
One major issue in low-resource settings is the lack of microbiologists to interpret antibiograms—tests that determine bacterial sensitivity to antibiotics. Antibiogo addresses this gap by enabling non-expert lab technicians to measure and interpret antibiograms directly on their mobile devices. This allows healthcare providers in LMIC to prescribe the most effective antibiotics even in resource-limited settings.
“Thanks to Antibiogo, any microbiology laboratory technician, anywhere in LMIC, will be able to read and interpret an antibiogram directly on their telephone and know the resistance profile of the bacteria responsible for the patient infection,” says Dr. Nada Malou. This capability improves patient care and reduces inappropriate antibiotic use, a key factor in combating AMR.
Antibiogo is available for free download and offline use by microbiology laboratories worldwide. This marks a significant step forward in the global fight against antibiotic resistance.
